High Rate and Impact Experiments in Material Science

The study of materials subjected to high strain rates and impact is critical for advancing the understanding of material mechanics in extreme conditions, which is fundamental for applications across space physics, aerospace, automotive, and defense industries. The need for constitutive models to describe and predict the response of materials under dynamic transients has motivated the development of various experimental techniques and measurement methods over the years. In this presentation, the main testing techniques and devices that can provide repeatable and accurate quantitative measurements and their use in support of modeling are discussed. Recently introduced experimental techniques capable of reproducing complex strain rate, temperature and pressure conditions with which to conduct verification and validation of material models are presented.
